This summer, disruptions and delays on the railway through the Alentejo forced me onto the road, driving for hours through the region’s fascinating rural landscapes.

It was somewhere along those roads, that I met Bea. She was a young slender brunette with elegant features, deep dark eyes and a mischievous gait.

Bea had spent the night nearby, sleeping in a tent. When she woke up, she was clearly not in the mood for a photoshoot. But there was an intensity in her that was difficult to keep quiet. It seemed to awaken the moment she had the opportunity to stand in front of a camera.

Little by little, the tiredness of the night began to disappear. Something else was taking its place. What happened next exceeded my expectations by far. The strong contrast of sunlight filtering through the branches seemed to soften everything around us. The heat, the silence and the roughness of the earth became part of the encounter. Nothing was promised, yet something began. Bea naturally belonged to that place.

Her beauty felt magnetically connected to the landscape, to the textures of the environment and to the vegetation. And beneath the trees, surrounded by the warm smell of the woods, the European summer seemed to draw time into a slower dimension.

For PHOTOSTORIES Nº26, I met Mila, a 23-year-old university student with a passion for rock climbing. We crossed paths near Les Salles-sur-Verdon, just days before her final university exam, at one of her favourite climbing crags. As I arrived, she was preparing her climbing gear at the foot of the rock face. Her relaxed attitude immediately caught my attention.

After a brief conversation, Mila agreed to take part in a photo session. Completely at ease in front of the camera, she moved naturally through the landscape. The rugged cliffs, sweeping views, raw textures of the climbing environment, and the rapidly changing light of a torrid European summer day combined to create the perfect setting for a unique series of photographs.

As I followed her through the landscape, I documented her connection with one of the places where she feels most at home. Later, we made our way down to the nearby village. Along the way, she changed into a different outfit, bringing a new atmosphere to the final part of the session.

As the afternoon came to an end, we returned to our cars, exchanged numbers, and said goodbye, wondering if our paths might cross again someday.
